What is a British Shorthair?

"The Cat Who Smiles"

The British Shorthair has a rich history of development that can be traced back to the domestic cats of Egypt who were taken to Rome, and inevitably landed in England. The number of British Shorthair cats suffered dramatically during the first and second World Wars, resulting in other breeds of cats used as an out-cross to expand the gene pool, and this has created the breed that we know and love today. With a unique appearance and body type, the British Shorthair is often referred to as having a “Cheshire Cat” smile. British Shorthair cats are sometimes called “British Blues” as they are best known for their thick, plush, blue-gray coat. This breed is also available in most cat colours and coat patterns. Their round full face is complimented by their large round eyes that range in colour from gold to copper. They are a sturdy cat with a stocky and muscular body, generally weighing 9-18 lbs. They are easy-going, intelligent, and extremely affectionate companions. They make wonderful pets for busy young families, and for less active ones.
